Groundwater, a solution to water needs

13 April 2022

On the occasion of the 9th World Water Forum in Dakar on March 21, UNESCO released the United Nations World Water Development Report.

Entitled "Groundwater: Making the invisible visible", it calls on "States to commit themselves to developing adequate and effective groundwater management and governance policies in order to address current and future water crises throughout the globe".

It is recalled that groundwater accounts for 99% of the Earth's available freshwater. Currently, half of the water used for domestic purposes in the world comes from these reserves.

More generally, the UN agency calls on States and local governments to collect more data on this subject, to strengthen their environmental regulatory frameworks and to help increase the professional, material and financial resources of some less favored countries.
