Wastewater reuse with advanced treatment is taking a leap forward: the SWIFT process allows the resulting near-potable water to be injected directly into an aquifer to produce drinking water. This also has the effect of limiting contamination of the aquifer by saltwater intrusion from the Atlantic Ocean. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has provided nearly $500 million for this project.
