Summary: Biosolids treatment and management is a growing challenge for wastewater treatment plants. Land application and incineration are the main disposal options; however, there are growing restrictions on land application of biosolids including bans in some areas. Occurrence, fate, and impact of emerging microbial and chemical contaminants in biosolids are concerning, and we do not have a good understanding of the risks posed by these contaminants due to existing research gaps. This presentation will provide a critical review of new emerging pathogens and contaminants of concern including PFAS, antimicrobial resistance, emerging viruses, nanoparticles, and microplastics, their potential risks and impacts, and successful approaches for their management. The presentation will also cover the recent regulatory developments in Europe, and how they may impact the regulations in Canada in the near future.ood containers will be presented, which will compare the impacts of microplastic litter to other impact categories (climate change, water use, etc.).

Don't miss the entire series of CentrEau Hebd'Eau webinars "All about water management". The webinars are short 20-minute presentations where CentrEau professors and researchers, as well as guest speakers, present their research and its importance in a semi-popularized manner. They are followed by a brief Q&A period and are held live every other Thursday at 1 p.m. Check out the previous webinars on our YouTube Channel.
