Speaker: Daniel Nadeau is a professor in the Department of Civil and Water Engineering at Laval University and director of the Bachelor of Science in Water Engineering. His research interests are in the field of cold region hydrometeorology, with a focus on evaporation, snow accumulation and melting, and water and energy exchanges between the land surface and the atmosphere.

Language : Presentation in French and slide show in French.

Summary: The water footprint is an emerging environmental indicator that quantifies the water consumed to produce a good or service. Applied to hydropower, this concept amounts to estimating the net evaporation resulting from the creation of a reservoir, for a unit of energy produced. However, measuring the evaporation of a reservoir and comparing it to that of the surrounding land is a major logistical challenge, due to the intangible nature of this hydrological flow. This is a challenge that our team has chosen to address at the Romaine hydroelectric complex in the North Shore region. This presentation will summarize our field and modeling work of the past few years, as well as the multiple discoveries we have made along the way.

Don't miss the entire series of CentrEau Hebd'Eau webinars "All about water management". The webinars are short 20-minute presentations where CentrEau professors and researchers, as well as guest speakers, present their research and its importance in a semi-popularized manner. They are followed by a brief Q&A period and are held live every other Thursday at 1 p.m. Check out the previous webinars on our YouTube Channel.
