An Arctic lake harbors special viruses that affect its algae

16 September 2022

A team of researchers from the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Bioinformatics at Laval University has discovered distinctive microbubbles in an Arctic lake in Canada.

This Milne Fiord lake, an epishelf lake, has the particularity of being superimposed on denser salt water. The mixing of the waters is prevented by a layer of ice.

Samples have been taken there, and particular viruses have been discovered. The algae would be affected.

Now that climate change is threatening the ice cover of this environment, researchers must move quickly to study it.
