Gulf of St. Lawrence warmer than ever

19 January 2022

Research shows that 2021 was a record warm year for Gulf water.

The heat causes deep areas of the St. Lawrence river to become very low in dissolved oxygen (hypoxic zones, boderline anoxic), which could have serious consequences on the fauna and flora, in addition to possibly enriching the waters with toxic heavy metals and dissolved sulfides due to the oxidation of organic matter by bacteria.

One of the reasons for anoxia is the pollution of the water by untreated or maltreated municipal, agricultural or industrial wastewater.
