Saint-Hippolyte wants to protect its groundwater

13 April 2022

Faced with the increase in its population (6% in the last year), the municipality of Saint-Hippolyte has announced that it will tighten the exploitation of its underground water.

The municipality located north of Saint-Jérôme, in the Laurentides, will modify its bylaw so that new constructions requiring the drilling of five or more wells come with a more restrictive hydrogeological study.

"This study will have to," it says on the Hippolytois website, "estimate the water consumption projected by the development project, evaluate the capacity of the aquifer to supply the water demand on a perennial basis, show that the groundwater meets government standards and give an opinion as to the capacity to meet the water supply needs in the future."

Housing projects with 10 or more wells drilled into a single aquifer will even be monitored and reported on annually.
