Western crops suffer as glaciers melt

27 April 2022

Did you know that most cultures in Western Canada are not irrigated? They are almost entirely dependent on rainfall.

However, due to climate change, droughts are becoming more frequent. The heat dome that appeared in the summer of 2021 in British Columbia is a good example.

As a result, irrigation is being used more and more to deal with the vagaries of the climate. Alberta is by far the province with the most irrigated land in Canada (3 out of 4 on a national scale).

But this source is also in danger, as the glaciers in the Rocky Mountains, which feed the watersheds from which the irrigated water comes, are melting rapidly.

This "digital story", as well as those on water in the Okanagan Valley and in Quebec, are available on the Radio-Canada website » [in French]
