Drinking water in Quebec City: 5,000 fewer Olympic-sized pools than 15 years ago

10 November 2022

Between 2006 and 2021, Quebecers decreased their water consumption from 522 liters to 396 liters per person per day.

This decrease is largely attributable to the plugging of leaks, with the rate of leaks dropping from 35% to 14% over the same period. The Old Capital invests an average of $155 million per year in its water system.

What's more, the City is working to educate the public on the importance of conserving water resources. It seems to be working, as a drop in water consumption was observed during a peak period thanks to this approach.

So much so that the City rules out any implementation of water meters in the near future. "People don't have water meters at home so it's hard to self-assess. But we don't want to go into coercion," says Marie-Josée Asselin, vice-president of the executive committee.
