Overview of the state of groundwater levels in English Canada

25 January 2022

Climate change is affecting surface water as much as groundwater. Based on this premise, Ground Water Canada, a digital magazine that, as its name suggests, focuses on groundwater and well drilling, conducted a review of recent groundwater levels in Canada.

In British Columbia in 2021, 85% of the 121 wells measured had stable or increasing levels, 6% had slightly lower levels and 9% showed high rates of decline.

Overall, rates of increase and decrease were variable in 2021 in Alberta, while Saskatchewan shallow aquifers declined again, as in the previous year, and all Manitoba aquifer levels declined in 2021.

Additional statistics from elsewhere in Canada are available on the Ground Water Canada website »

Quebec is not included in the list of provinces identified by the website.
