Recognition of a legal personality for the St. Lawrence River

16 November 2021

Inspired by the legal traditions of indigenous peoples, this current is part of the ecocentrism movement, which considers that humanity is no longer the "master" of nature, but that of the species. Considering that the state of the St. Lawrence River, the largest waterway in Quebec, has deteriorated over the years, the International Observatory for Nature's Rights (IONR) has drafted a bill to recognize the St. Lawrence River as an entity legal and subject of law. The bill was published in the spring of 2021 and is available in the collective work entitled “The legal entity of the St. Lawrence River and the rivers of the world”.

In order to establish a citizens' alliance around the St. Lawrence River and within the framework of the World Day of Rivers and Rivers, the IONR held a public consultation on September 26 in order to hear the opinions of citizens on this subject. . This consultation is continuing and anyone interested is invited to answer a series of questions, including determining the best river manager, the right to be recognized on the St. Lawrence River and the relevance of extending this status. to other courts.
