The fight against environmental contamination: a major step forward

29 August 2022

Toxic chemicals are present in the drinking water supplies of more than 200 million Americans. Research has also revealed their presence in some foods and in the air.

To combat environmental contaminants around the world, a study suggests that a new technique to break down some of the toxic chemicals infecting U.S. water supplies may be a major advance.

According to the study, toxic chemicals do not break down easily, and the man-made methods that have been used are not only expensive, but have shown their limitations.

Brittany Trang, a researcher at Northwestern and one of the lead authors of the study said "[there] is no way to dispose of PFAS that is benign, so we need to find a way to get rid of PFAS in a way that is still not polluting."
