The SWOT (Surface Water and Ocean Topography) satellite was successfully launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on December 16.
With a duration of three and a half years, its function is to map with unprecedented accuracy the oceans and surface water networks of the continents.
Millions of lakes (at least 250 m wide) and rivers (at least 100 m wide) will be observed as well as the evolution of their depth.
The Canadian Space Agency has contributed to this Franco-American project by providing the microwave radar technology that will allow this precise measurement of water level changes.
