UN to recognize glacier preservation in 2025 thanks to Canadian researchers

Thanks to Canadian researchers, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution declaring the year 2025 as the International Year of Glacier Conservation.

The concept, which Coldwater Lab Director John Pomeroy says is rooted near his home in Canmore, Alberta, is an opportunity to shine a light on the impending disappearance of glaciers. The year 2025 will be symbolic for researchers who will be able to publish their scientific findings and climate projections, in hopes that the world can change course.

"Climate change has now accelerated to the rate that is occurring in the Arctic, and that is two to three times the global average," Sandford said. "The changes in the high mountains of the world, including ours, they're moving along at a rate that is much, much greater and much faster than what is happening in the rest of the world.
