Wastewater spills less frequent than before in Quebec

10 November 2022

Wastewater discharges to natural environments decreased by 30% in Quebec between 2020 and 2021. At least that's what the Fondation Rivières report card revealed in early November confirms.

These discharges, which numbered 52,794 in 2020, dropped to 36,391 in 2021.

This difference is explained by a particularly dry spring in 2021, and it is very likely that this number will rise again in 2022, "because the spring was very wet - the melt was quite rapid - and the summer was just as wet. This will have a direct impact on the capacity of the systems to manage this water," says André Bélanger, executive director of the foundation.

Despite this, the 700 municipalities compared in this ranking show an overall downward trend. This is a source of great satisfaction for the environmental protection organization.
