CWRA Flood Zone Mapping Workshop

The Quebec Chapter of the Canadian Water Resources Association (CWRA) is organizing the 5th edition of its workshop on floodplain mapping to be held in Montreal on February 1st. The theme of the workshop is: Flooding and Resilience: Challenges and Opportunities.

The workshop will take place at Agora du Cœur des sciences de l'UQAM | Université du Québec à Montréal.

With major floods observed in several regions of Quebec in the spring of 2017 and 2019, the damage and socio-economic disruptions they caused have sent shock waves through the population and decision-makers. Floods and the question of the definition of flood-prone areas have thus returned to the forefront of the news and have become a major social issue in recent years.

The main objectives of the technical workshop are to :

  • Present the main initiatives aimed at implementing best practices, with targeted feedback that can be used for Quebec;
  • Discuss the interactions between flood assessment, floodplain mapping and land development;
  • Facilitate the exchange of information between researchers, practitioners and decision-makers in order to develop a common and coherent approach to floodplain delineation.

With speakers from various government departments, municipal agencies, universities and consulting firms, the workshop represents a unique opportunity for stakeholders affected by flood impacts, flooding, floodplain mapping and land use planning to learn about the latest approaches and initiatives to frame these important planning activities.
