Indigeneous communities make history in water management

10 November 2022

As of November 7, Mi'kmaq communities in Nova Scotia have their own water agency with the creation of the Atlantic First Nations Water Authority.

This is the first agency of its kind in Canada. Eventually, 4,500 households in 17 First Nations communities will benefit from the services of this new entity.

"This has been a long time in the making and we are grateful to the leadership and commitment from our communities to get us to this milestone, said Wilbert Marshall, Chief of the Potlotek First Nation and Chair of the agency's Board of Directors. We look forward to building capacity and increasing the level of service to standards enjoyed by other residents of Canada. We have blazed a trail for others to follow but that is the way of the Wabanaki who have always been first to see the dawn."

Indigenous Services Canada will provide a total of $257 million to fund the Atlantic First Nations Water Authority's deployment and programming.
