Water will be better protected by Quebec starting in 2023

22 December 2022

On the occasion of the second part of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15.2) in Montreal, Premier François Legault announced on December 15 that Quebec will introduce a bill in January to protect water resources.

Specifically, the objective of the bill is to increase the fees charged to industrial and commercial water users.

These higher fees will be accompanied by public accountability through disclosure of water use by these corporate entities.

"Knowing what uses are made and how much is taken will cause them to review some of their practices," said Benoit Charette, head of the Ministère de l'Environnement, de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, de la Faune et des Parcs. "There is going to be public pressure on top of that [...]. Both the price itself will be an element as well as the social pressure that could generate a change in behavior."
